From the Andes to the Amazon

Your journey begins in Cusco, the historic heart of the Inca Empire. Once the capital of Tawantinsuyu and later shaped by Spanish conquistadors, Cusco is a living tapestry of cultures layered through time. Accommodations are at the renowned Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel, a former monastery celebrated for its tranquil courtyards, refined service and deep sense of place.

Guided explorations introduce Cusco’s most significant landmarks, including the imposing Sacsayhuamán Fortress, the sacred Coricancha Temple, the grand Cathedral and the lively Plaza de Armas. Leisure time allows you to explore at your own pace — perhaps on a horseback ride in the surrounding countryside, a stroll through the arts district, a visit to the MAP Museum or a hands-on ceramics class.

From Cusco, the journey continues into the breathtaking Sacred Valley, where the remarkable ruins of Ollantaytambo and Pinkuylluna offer insight into the ingenuity and daily life of the Inca civilization. Panoramic views unfold as you board a scenic train through the valley toward Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, for an overnight stay.

Machu Picchu: A Wonder of the World

Few places on Earth inspire the same sense of wonder as Machu Picchu. Perched high above the Urubamba River and wrapped in mist, this UNESCO World Heritage site reveals itself gradually — stone terraces emerging from cloud cover, sacred temples aligned with the movements of the sun and mountains rising dramatically in every direction.

You may choose to arrive early, as the first light of day washes over the ancient citadel, illuminating its precisely engineered stonework and offering a quiet, almost reverent atmosphere. For those seeking a more active experience, opt to hike up Huayna Picchu, which provides a thrilling perspective from above. Narrow paths and steep Inca stairways lead to sweeping panoramic views of the ruins and surrounding peaks (permit required).

Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll explore Machu Picchu’s most significant structures, gaining insight into its sophisticated architecture, astronomical alignments and enduring mystery. From the Temple of the Sun to the agricultural terraces carved into the mountainside, every detail reflects the ingenuity of the Inca civilization and the spiritual importance of this remote sanctuary.

The experience concludes in unforgettable fashion aboard the elegant Hiram Bingham train, where fine dining and attentive service accompany the journey back through the Andes. As dramatic landscapes unfold beyond the windows, dinner is served and the day’s discoveries linger. A final overnight stay at the Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel in Cusco offers a refined and restorative close to the Andean chapter of your journey.

Into the Heart of the Peruvian Amazon

A flight to Iquitos marks a true threshold moment — the transition into one of the most biologically rich and awe-inspiring regions on Earth. Peru is home to the greatest variety of bird species in the world and the third-largest number of mammals, many of which thrive deep within the vast Amazon basin. From the moment you arrive, the scale, sounds and vitality of the rainforest make it clear this is a destination unlike any other.

Here, you embark on a five-day, four-night privately chartered cruise aboard the Aria Amazon, an intimate and contemporary vessel reserved exclusively for this group. Spacious river-view suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, an open-air observation deck, plunge pool and refined indoor lounge ensure comfort throughout the voyage.

Each day unfolds with thoughtfully curated excursions led by expert naturalist guides who bring the rainforest to life. Activities include kayaking along winding tributaries, guided jungle walks, wildlife spotting by skiff, visiting indigenous villages and communities, and even traditional piranha fishing. As you explore, keep watch for pink river dolphins surfacing beside the boat, sloths draped in the canopy, playful monkeys and flashes of color from vibrant parrots overhead. Evenings offer time to unwind as the sun sets in brilliant shades of gold and amber over the river, followed by regionally inspired cuisine crafted by a renowned chef — a fitting close to days rich with discovery and immersion in the Amazon’s extraordinary rhythms.

A Note on Physical Activity

This journey involves walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs, and extended periods of physical activity at elevations up to 11,152 feet in Cusco and 7,972 feet at Machu Picchu. Travelers should be in good physical health and able to manage the potential effects of high altitude, such as shortness of breath, fatigue or dizziness.
