Falling for France

I honeymooned in Paris and the French Riviera and fell in love with everything French. It had been my dream to see the art that I had studied, and the scenes that inspired it in real life, but the reality was even better than I could have imagined. I have been back to France more times than I can count, and adore the lifestyle, the food, and the people. Over the years, I have developed strong relationships with hotel managers of many wonderful hotels, inns and chateaus are eager to treat my clients like VIPs.

Seeing the places you have heard of and seen in movies is thrilling. Thanks to my decades of exploring and arranging travel to France, I can help you check off everything on your list in the most efficient and enjoyable way possible. I often suggest touring the Loire Valley chateaus with a private car and driver. That way, you won’t have to wait on line for tickets, and as you are traveling, your guide will regale you with anecdotes about the people who built and lived on these lavish estates.

Similarly, going to Normandy with a knowledgeable guide means you won’t wait to get into the cemetery, and your guide will show you the most interesting and famous graves and tell you the stories behind them. Plus, if you are driving from Paris, you’ll be able to stop at Monet’s House and Garden in Giverny on the way back.

Traveling is about more than sightseeing, so once I know your interests and what you enjoy doing, I like to suggest special experiences that can deepen your connection to the French people and the culture.

I can arrange very personal experiences such as visits to family-owned wineries, where the owner may show you the vineyards and the wine-making process, share their family history and provide a private tasting. If you’d like to take a French cooking class, I can arrange one with a famous chef that begins with a trip to the market to pick out the ingredients, or with a homemaker, who will invite you to shop and cook with her and then share a family meal.

I advise my clients to learn a bit of French; just being able to say s’il vous plaît and merci (please and thank you) goes a long way towards showing that you are not just another demanding tourist, but someone who respects their culture. You’ll find that you are treated better and people are more eager to genuinely communicate with you.

Another thing I suggest to those who want an authentic French experience is to step out of your comfort zone a bit. Walk around a residential neighborhood and then sit in a café and people-watch. Find a restaurant with a Plat du Jour, the daily special, and order it. If you don’t speak French, bring a dictionary. You might find yourself eating rabbit or something unfamiliar, but it will be delicious, different and undeniably French!
