Africa at Europe’s doorstep, the Kingdom of Morocco’s regal ancient cities offer medinas, kasbahs, and bustling souks. Its topography boasts dazzling diversity from its windswept coastline stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea to its Atlas Mountains. And, of course, the grand Sahara Desert. Its cuisine is a mélange of Arab, Berber, French, Middle Eastern, African, and Jewish influences. A trip to Morocco is a truly delicious adventure.
In 2023, my clients, a professional culinary organization, asked me to create a 10-day trip to Morocco for spring 2024. I had never been there. But I love a challenge! I began researching destination management companies, hotels, riads, cooking schools, and must-see sights and sites for these two groups of 20 plus well-traveled participants. I made an advance trip to finalize our itinerary and conducted site inspections, met with vendors, guides, and appraised experiences. That May I escorted the tours. Morocco is exotic, delicious, and indeed magical. The tours were a great success!
- Our itinerary started in Morocco’s capital, Rabat, then moved on to Fez—Morocco’s oldest city and its spiritual center. Everyone loved Fez, and our hotel, a stunning 5-star riad tucked away in the city’s Instagram-worthy medina. We traveled out to the Sahara Desert and overnighted at a luxury tent camp. Everyone opted for the sunset camel ride. We made a fun stop at Quarzazate - known as “Morocco’s Hollywood”- en route to Marrakesh.
- Exotic, famed, and fascinating, Marrakesh is a must-visit. We did a chef-led walking & tasting tour of its historic bustling square- Jemaa el-Fnaa – before a hands-on cooking lesson. After an excursion to the High Atlas Mountains and a special visit with a Berber family, a tour highlight, we wound down with a three-night stay in Essaouira. Everyone loved this enchanting coastal town, with its cool, laid-back artistic vibe. We finished our trip in Casablanca.
