An Insider’s View of India

India fascinates me. As an India specialist, I travel to India frequently to keep my professional relationships fresh and up-to-date, but I also often go there for my vacations. I have been there more times than I can count throughout many decades, and every visit has been a different adventure.

I have backpacked through impoverished areas and had experiences that seem impossibly luxurious. India is so diverse and beautiful that pinpointing one highlight is impossible. Every journey is like an excursion into a unique bazaar, and for those who want to become immersed in the culture, the possibilities are boundless.

India is very large. Its geography and peoples vary so much from region to region that it is like many different countries in one. Despite the differences in customs, cuisine, and dialects, there seems to be some invisible glue that binds together everything and everyone.

I often wonder what makes these disparate citizens all add up to one country, and I think it is due to the shared experience of pilgrimage. The populace goes on frequent journeys to holy sites which bring residents from the north to the south and vice versa. It is both a diverse population and one with its own unique harmony, and I have never observed anything like it anywhere else in the world.

Many places in India have become modernized, yet there is still the sense that beneath the modern veneer, India is frozen and thriving in some distant past. Being there feels as though I am traveling through living history, and I believe the feeling I get is what those in biblical times must have felt. I have been all over the world, but I have never visited a country that gave me that same profound feeling. This has kept me very passionate about India, and it is why I love to create special journeys to India for my clients.
