You are dreaming of taking an African Safari, but exactly what wildlife might you encounter in the rich biodiversity of Kenya? Plan to visit these three distinct regions and see a huge variety of species.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve
The Maasai Mara is arguably Kenya's most famous safari destination, renowned for its dense wildlife populations and dramatic landscapes. It's one of the best places to see the Big Five, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. The Mara is also home to the "Big Nine", which includes cheetahs, giraffes, hippos and zebra. The annual "Great Migration" is a special time of year when thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Mara River.
Tsavo East and West National Parks:
Tsavo is Kenya's largest protected area, known for its vast, rugged terrain and dramatic scenery. Besides the Big Five, you could also site kudu, gerenuk, waterbuck, and pods of hippos and crocodiles.
Your safari director will be helpful and have a diverse knowledge of the more than 60 mammal species and 500 bird species.
Loisaba Conservancy (Laikipia Plateau):
Loisaba offers a more intimate and conservation-focused safari experience. The conservancy is 56,000 acres and is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species. Expect to see Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra, and Beisa Oryx.
Loisaba is also a great place to spot African wild dogs.
The habitat is diverse and provides a wilderness feel with excellent opportunities for guided walks, horseback safaris, and community engagement.
