Recently, our family learned firsthand why Hawaii is such a fantastic destination for travelers of all ages. We had the privilege of exploring the islands of Oahu and Maui, and there was no shortage of picture-perfect beaches, outdoor activities like hiking, biking, surfing and ziplining, and ways to experience the Hawaiian culture through music, dancing and of course, food!
Some of our trip highlights included enjoying our first luau together, learning about the history of the Hawaiian people and marveling at the talented performers doing the traditional hula dances, savoring each sweet sip of shaved ice – an island favorite, paddling an Outrigger canoe to a private snorkeling cove, and gazing at the endlessly starry sky after the famous Hawaiian sunsets. We even had some exciting wildlife experiences, including when an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal decided to make our resort beach it’s resting place for one morning during our stay, and when a humongous sea turtle swam right by us while we relaxed in the surf!
One of the most memorable parts of our trip was a Road to Hana tour, where we took a private luxury van (together with a couple on their Honeymoon) along the road, making stops at hiking trails, waterfalls, and gorgeous lookout points, followed by a picnic lunch in the town of Hana, a swimming stop at the black sand beach in Wainapanapa State park, and ending with a breathtaking helicopter ride around Haleakala over rainforests, volcanic craters, deserts and waterfalls across the island of Maui. It’s an experience that I am so glad we shared together as a family, and one that I know none of us will ever forget!
