I recently had the opportunity to explore the Galápagos Islands, beginning with several days in Quito before traveling through Guayaquil to Santa Cruz Island and the stunning Pikaia Lodge. As someone who has long been fascinated by the Galápagos as the place that inspired Darwin's theory of evolution, experiencing it firsthand was truly unforgettable. Seeing wildlife thrive in such a protected environment, completely unafraid of human presence, was unlike anything I've experienced before.
Today, I help clients navigate the many decisions involved in planning a Galápagos journey, from choosing the right luxury lodge or expedition cruise or a combination of both. For true luxury I recommend combining a stay at Pikaia Lodge (Relais & Chateaux) on Santa Cruz, with a small-ship cruise to the outer islands, allowing travelers to experience the remarkable diversity of landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems found throughout the archipelago. I also encourage spending a few nights in Quito, both for added travel flexibility and to enjoy one of South America's most historic and charming cities.
From giant tortoises and marine iguanas to blue-footed boobies and frigate birds, the Galápagos offers extraordinary encounters at every turn. My most memorable moment was snorkeling alongside a curious sea lion that came so close it felt as though we were sharing the experience together. It's these magical, once-in-a-lifetime moments that make the Galápagos one of the world's most rewarding destinations, and I'd love to help you experience it for yourself.
