DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT: San Sebastián, Spain
S

et along Spain's northern coast in the heart of the Basque Country, San Sebastián combines celebrated restaurants, sweeping beaches, a strong cultural identity and a culinary tradition that extends beyond Michelin stars. Markets, pintxos bars, fishing villages and family-run dining institutions all contribute to a food culture woven into daily life rather than reserved for special occasions. Late summer and early autumn suit the city particularly well, with outdoor terraces still bustling, seafood at its peak and the surrounding coastline remaining inviting while a slightly slower pace makes it easier to settle into life like a local.

Know Before You Go

Best timing: September and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds and excellent conditions for exploring both San Sebastián and the wider Basque region.

Getting around: Much of San Sebastián can be explored on foot. Travelers looking to experience nearby coastal towns, wineries or Bilbao may wish to arrange a private driver or rental car.

Pacing tip: Three to four nights allows enough time to balance Michelin-starred dining, pintxos experiences and excursions into the surrounding Basque countryside.

What surprises most travelers: Despite its global culinary reputation, San Sebastián remains remarkably approachable. Some of the city's most memorable meals happen standing at a crowded bar with a glass of txakoli in hand.

These properties offer different perspectives on one of Europe's most celebrated food destinations.

Located within a restored Belle Époque building overlooking La Concha Bay, Nobu Hotel San Sebastián pairs contemporary luxury with one of the city's most recognizable waterfront settings. Its location creates easy access to the beaches, Old Town and many of the restaurants that have helped shape the city's culinary reputation.

Palacio Arriluce

Experiences That Define San Sebastián

San Sebastián's reputation may rest on Michelin stars, but many travelers leave talking just as much about the pintxos bars. Restaurants such as Arzak, Akelarre and Martín Berasategui have helped establish the city as one of Europe's great dining destinations, collectively holding some of the highest concentrations of Michelin stars anywhere in the world. Yet some of the most memorable meals happen on a much smaller scale.

Everyone will tell you to visit Bar Nestor for its famous tortilla, and they're right. But don't overlook places such as La Cuchara de San Telmo, where slow-cooked beef cheek has become a favorite, or Ganbara, celebrated for seasonal pintxos that showcase the quality of ingredients.

Travelers interested in cultural dimension may choose to spend time at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, while others venture to nearby Getaria for a private visit to the Balenciaga Museum before opening hours.

The coastline also inspires exploration. Fishing villages, surfing beaches and scenic walking paths connect many of the communities that help define the Basque Country.

Beyond San Sebastián

Many visitors use San Sebastián as a gateway to the wider region. Day trips into Rioja wine country, coastal excursions to Getaria and longer journeys toward Bilbao or Bordeaux create opportunities to experience the diversity of northern Spain and southwestern France in a single itinerary.

San Sebastián Planned by an Expert

More than a dining destination, San Sebastián becomes a place where food, culture, history and landscape remain closely connected. Balancing Michelin-starred dining with local favorites, coastal exploration, cultural experiences and time in the surrounding Basque Country often creates a more complete picture of the destination.
