Northern Portugal

Portugal is a beautifully compact country, making it easy to explore in a relatively short time. My journey began in the north, starting in the charming city of Porto—a place known for its rich port wine heritage, the stunning Douro River, and a laid-back vibe that contrasts with the bustling energy of Lisbon. Porto’s colorful, tile-covered buildings and narrow, winding streets create a romantic and historic atmosphere. I spent my days wandering through the city's charming neighborhoods, exploring landmarks like the Livraria Lello (one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world) and the São Bento Railway Station, known for its intricate azulejo tilework. A highlight was visiting Taylor Fladgate, one of Porto’s oldest and most renowned port houses, where I had the chance to sample some exceptional port wine while taking in breathtaking views of the river from their terrace.

A short train ride from Porto brought me to Aveiro, often called the "Venice of Portugal." I hopped aboard a colorful moliceiro—a boat similar to a Venetian gondola—which guided me through the charming canals of Aveiro, offering a unique view of the town's picturesque architecture and vibrant atmosphere. After soaking in Porto’s rich culture, I set off on a road trip to the Douro Valley—but not without a few memorable stops along the way. First, I visited Guimarães, often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal. The medieval charm of this town is palpable, especially while touring the Guimarães Castle, a well-preserved fortress that offers insight into the country’s early history. Next was Amarante, a quaint riverside town known for its picturesque bridge, colorful houses, and the serene São Gonçalo Church. Strolling through Amarante felt like stepping back in time, with its quiet streets and welcoming cafés. My final stop before reaching the Douro Valley was Braga, one of Portugal’s oldest cities. There, I climbed the grand Bom Jesus do Monte staircase, marveling at the baroque architecture and the breathtaking panoramic views of Braga from the top.

Once I arrived in the Douro Valley, I was greeted by rolling hills lined with terraced vineyards—a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looks like it’s been plucked from a postcard. One of the most unforgettable moments of my trip was sailing down the Douro River. Gliding through the valley by boat gave me a completely different perspective of the region’s beauty—the steep vineyards cascading down to the water's edge, the peaceful rhythm of the river, and the golden sunlight hitting the hillsides. I spent my time visiting family-run wineries, learning about the intricate winemaking process, and savoring some of the finest wines the region has to offer. The Douro Valley’s peaceful atmosphere, combined with the stunning landscapes of vine-covered hills, provided the perfect escape from city life. The Douro Valley offered a serene and peaceful escape, allowing me to fully unwind and recharge. I indulged in some relaxing time at the spa, where I experienced a few local Douro Valley treatments that left me feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
